A moment displaying the bond between a man and his dog was captured at a funeral home in Huntersville, North Carolina. The photo, taken by a 12-year-old girl, shows a dog leaning over his owner’s casket. The image was posted on Huntersville’s James Funeral Home page.

The funeral home’s director, Sam James, asked the girl if he could share the touching photo with the community. James says the girl’s grandmother is the one seen in the picture with the dog, “Chief,” as the two said goodbye to Bill Schiller, the woman’s boyfriend.

The community appeared touched by the photo. “This is a very dear friend of ours who died way too early but is now in heaven with Jesus! He was never a dog person but Chief changed his heart and life!” a person commented on the post. “Thank you for capturing a moment that I know Bill would be smiling at! Thank you James Funeral home for your kindness to this family!”

James says he accommodated the request for Chief to visit Schiller and say goodbye, as the two shared a special bond. “I believe it helps them [dogs] connect the dots in the same way it helps us connect the dots,” James said.
